A trading journal for Topstep that fills itself
Typing futures trades into a journal by hand is where most journals die — especially on a Topstep account, where one session can mean a dozen fills for three trades. Evidence connects to TopstepX directly and does the bookkeeping for you.
TopstepX sync, without exports
TopstepX runs on ProjectX, and ProjectX lets every trader create their own API key. You enter your TopstepX username and that key once in Evidence, under Auto Tracking → TopstepX. From then on every account under that login — Trading Combines and Express Funded accounts — sends its trades to your journal every ten minutes, whether the app is open or not. The first sync brings in the last 30 days.
The API key comes with a ProjectX subscription that you pay to ProjectX, not to Evidence. Topstep lists how to get one in TopstepX under Settings → API.
Scale-ins and partial exits stay one trade
Futures traders rarely get in and out in one fill. A journal that pairs single fills turns one trade with two partial exits into three trades — two of them nonsense. Evidence rebuilds each position from the fills: it nets them per account and contract and writes one trade when you are flat again, with your average entry, your average exit, the largest size you held, and the P&L and fees exactly as TopstepX booked them. A position you flip from long to short is closed and re-opened, the way it actually happened.
The Trading Combine rules, already set
A Topstep account that arrives through the sync is created as a prop account with Topstep’s rules: the profit target and the end-of-day maximum loss for its size, the consistency rule (your best day below 55 % of the target) and the two-day minimum, counted on Topstep’s own clock — the trading day ends at 5 pm Chicago time. Evidence reads the size from the account name; if it cannot, it asks you once. Express Funded accounts are recognised as funded.
From there the whole app measures that account the way Topstep does: the distance to your maximum loss in dollars, the room left today, a warning on the trade card when a stop would use most of it, and a plain message when every condition is met.
What you get on top of the bookkeeping
- Edge & Leaks — every symbol, session, hour and habit tested against your other trades, so you see whether NQ in the first hour is really your edge.
- Futures replay — ES, NQ, YM, GC, CL and the micros in whole contracts with CME tick values, to practise a setup on past days before you risk the combine.
- A cost ledger for combines, resets and payouts, so you know what the account really cost you.
When another journal fits better
If you trade Topstep through Rithmic or NinjaTrader instead of TopstepX, there is no direct sync in Evidence yet — your trades come in through a statement import or the NinjaTrader tracker. And if your firm runs on Tradovate (Apex, MyFundedFutures), the direct connection is not available yet either; statement import works today.
Evidence is not affiliated with Topstep or ProjectX. TopstepX and Topstep are their owners’ trademarks. Rule figures follow Topstep’s help centre as checked on 7 October 2026 (Trading Combine parameters) — always check yours against your own account. The TopstepX sync and futures replay are part of Pro.
